Either due to cautiousness or caginess Daudet had the taxi let him off a block away from the same Pigalle bar where he had earlier met Leon Thibaut. I knew that the short, round man who had provided Daudet with the loaded dice was named Leon Thibaut because Julia’s agency had identified him from the photo I sent her, as well as provided the phone number for the burner phone that he used. The reason Daudet at that early hour had taken a taxi to meet with Thibaut was because I had called him with Thibaut’s phone number showing up as the incoming call, and with my voice synthesized to sound like Thibaut, I told the Eel that he needed to meet with me at once, that it was a matter of life and death. Likewise, I did the same with Thibault, impersonating Daudet, and sending Thibaut to the same bar. So that they couldn’t call or text each other and discover this was a ruse, I also hacked into Daudet’s wireless provider and blocked Thibaut’s number for both incoming and outgoing calls and texts.

Julia had called earlier to let me know that the documents had been switched, and that the local police would be cooperating. I called her to tell her it was time to start the show. Daudet was still half a block away from the bar when a fast approaching siren blasted through the air. The thief slid into the shadows and watched as a police car pulled up in front of the bar, and then as two police officers hustled out of the same car. Forty-seven seconds later they were bringing Thibaut out of the bar and loading him into the back seat of the police car. Daudet waited until the police drove away before turning around and finding himself blocked by a large man whose face was hidden by the shadows. A cloud in the sky must’ve shifted then because the moonlight revealed the man’s identity. Inspector Lucien Enfier.

The Eel was too startled to either scream or run. Enfier slapped Daudet hard across his jaw. From the way Daudet slumped, he was most likely knocked out, but he didn’t fall to the sidewalk. Someone else had gotten behind him and was holding him up, which allowed me to watch the black sedan drive up to the sidewalk, its tires squealing as it came to an abrupt stop. The trunk was popped open, and after Enfier had taken Daudet’s phone, he and another person deposited Daudet and me into the trunk, then slammed the lid shut.

I called Julia. “I don’t think this is a good development,” I said, possibly making the understatement of the year.

“Archie, I’m fifteen minutes away. Keep calling with your GPS coordinates.”

Enfier drove northwest, eventually driving over the Seine, and then stopping three blocks from the river. Daudet had woken up earlier, and when the trunk was opened he tried scrambling out of it, but he was quickly overpowered. Enfier’s two accomplices carried him into an empty restaurant, brought him into the kitchen, and handcuffed him behind his back.
